Who We Are
Ripples of Resilience Uganda (RORU) is a community-based organization dedicated to building resilient communities across Uganda. We work alongside local populations to address systemic challenges in education, health, livelihoods, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.
Founded in the heart of Uganda, RORU believes that lasting change begins at the grassroots level. Through evidence-based programs and community-led initiatives, we empower individuals and families to overcome adversity and create sustainable futures.
“Every ripple of resilience we create together has the power to transform entire communities.”
Our Story
Ripples of Resilience Uganda (RORU) was born out of a deep conviction that every community, no matter how vulnerable, holds within it the seeds of transformation. Founded in 2016 in the bustling heart of Kampala, Uganda, RORU began as a small grassroots initiative driven by a group of passionate young Ugandans who witnessed firsthand the challenges facing their communities — from limited access to quality education and healthcare, to gender-based violence and environmental degradation. The idea was simple yet powerful: if you empower one person, the effects ripple outward through families, neighborhoods, and entire communities.
The early days — RORU founders meeting with community leaders
What started as weekend community clean-ups and informal tutoring sessions in Bwaise, one of Kampala's most underserved neighborhoods, quickly grew into something much larger. Within our first year, we had mobilized over 200 volunteers and reached more than 1,000 families through our grassroots health education campaigns. The response from communities was overwhelming — people were hungry for change, and they wanted to be part of the solution. Our volunteers came from all walks of life: university students, local business owners, retired teachers, and young professionals eager to give back to their communities. This diversity of backgrounds and skills became one of RORU's greatest strengths, allowing us to develop innovative solutions tailored to each community's unique needs.

By 2018, RORU had formally registered as a community-based organization and expanded its operations to three districts — Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono. We launched our flagship programs in education, community health, and women's empowerment, establishing learning centers in rural communities and training local health workers. Our integrated approach, which addresses multiple dimensions of vulnerability simultaneously, became our defining methodology. Each learning center served as a hub for multiple programs — after-school tutoring during the week, health education workshops on weekends, and women's savings groups in the evenings. This model maximized our resources while creating vibrant community spaces that people could call their own.

The years that followed brought both growth and adversity. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, RORU pivoted rapidly — distributing emergency food packages to over 3,000 vulnerable households, setting up community handwashing stations, and launching a mental health helpline. The crisis reinforced our belief that resilient communities are built not in times of ease, but through the shared experience of overcoming challenges together. Our community health workers, many of whom had been trained through our programs, became frontline responders — delivering vital information about prevention, helping families access government assistance, and providing emotional support during one of the most difficult periods in recent memory.
COVID-19 response — food distribution to vulnerable families
Today, RORU operates across eight districts in Uganda, reaching over 10,000 direct beneficiaries annually through six thematic program areas. We have built partnerships with international organizations including UNICEF, WHO Uganda, and UNDP, while remaining deeply rooted in the communities we serve. Our team of dedicated professionals and a network of over 500 trained community volunteers continue to spread ripples of resilience across Uganda. Our programs now encompass education and youth development, healthcare access, gender equality and women's empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, and peacebuilding — reflecting our holistic understanding that true community resilience requires progress across multiple fronts simultaneously.

As we look to the future, our vision remains unchanged — a Uganda where every community is resilient, self-sustaining, and thriving. We are committed to scaling our proven models, deepening our impact in existing communities, and expanding to new districts where our integrated approach can create lasting change. Every life transformed, every community empowered, and every barrier broken is a ripple that spreads outward, touching more lives than we can count. We are currently developing new initiatives in climate-smart agriculture, digital literacy for youth, and community-based mental health support — because as the world changes, so too must our approach to building resilience.
Empowering Communities Through Action
At Ripples of Resilience Uganda, our mission is to empower vulnerable communities across Uganda through integrated, evidence-based programs in education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, gender equality, and environmental conservation.
We believe that every community holds within it the seeds of transformation. By working alongside local populations, we nurture those seeds — providing the resources, training, and support needed for families and individuals to build self-sufficient, thriving futures. Our approach is rooted in the understanding that lasting change must come from within, driven by the very people it seeks to serve.
A Resilient Uganda For All
We envision a Uganda where every community is resilient, self-sustaining, and thriving — where children have access to quality education, families enjoy good health, and individuals have the means to earn a dignified living. A nation where gender-based discrimination is a thing of the past, where the environment is protected for future generations, and where the most vulnerable are uplifted through compassion, innovation, and collective action.
Every child in Uganda has access to quality, inclusive education that prepares them for a bright future.
Communities have access to essential healthcare services, clean water, and nutrition programs.
Families achieve financial independence through sustainable livelihood programs and skills training.
Communities actively protect and restore their natural environment for generations to come.
